Viking Plym - A short history

A short history

One of the most famous swedish boat constructors ever was a man named August Plym. His boats had a superior quality and were world famous. Some are still at sea. When Stockholm in 1912 arranged Olympic games he had in secrecy prepared a real PR-scoop.

He had got permission to use drawings for the Gokstad burial ship in Norway and had in secrecy a small viking ship built at his own shipyard outside Stockholm. It was not an exact replica ship but with Gokstad lines in her hull in approximately half scale. He also got inspired by the beauty of the other burial ship, Oseberg, and had a famous wood-carver,  Thor August Nerpin,  create marvellous ornaments. Among Nerpins other merits include the Royal Sloop, Vasaorden and crests for the swedish navy.

When the olympic sailors were gathered in Sandhamn his ship "Draken" (the Dragon) came sailing from the sea in full speed as a total surprise. What a success!

During the sixties she visited USA and Canada on PR-tours for swedish industry and craftsmenship. 1981 she was donated to the local community in Taby. The ship got a new name to honour the constructor and a "skeppslag" was formed to tend and man her.

Her historical background can be seen on the Roots page
